Guqin Solutions
A thousand years of zither sound · Chinese lacquer as its frame · Warm and smooth as jade
The Qin Jing says: "The instrument is lacquer without, wood within." Half of a guqin's sound comes from the wooden body and half from the lacquer ash — the thickness of the deer antler ash determines how open and resonant the tone is, and the hardness of the surface film affects how smoothly the hand travels. It is fair to say that a guqin maker who does not understand lacquer cannot make a good instrument.
The guqin solution gives makers and studios systematic lacquer support: high-urushiol guqin lacquer ensures bond strength with the ash body; deer antler powder and tile ash are supplied in coarse, medium and fine proportions; and polishing lacquer is formulated specifically for the guqin topcoat. Provincial-level ICH artisans also provide one-to-one guidance on ash body proportions and lacquering rhythm, so that every instrument gets a lacquer surface "as warm as jade".
